Tech Newsletter - Q2 2026
Managing Director of Tech Apps & Higher Education Introduction
Welcome to the latest edition of our student newsletter. I hope the spring/summer term has started well for you.
As always, AI, Cyber and emerging technologies continue to dominate news headlines and podcast content, even the BBC explored the topic in a primetime slot: AI Confidential with Hannah Fry. Hopefully you’ll agree that you’ve chosen an exciting field to work in and it’s a privilege that we get to play a part in your journey to becoming a digital professional whose work, ideas and decisions have real impact. Every project you contribute to, every problem you help solve, and every conversation where your voice carries weight is part of that critical journey from learner to technologist.
We are aware that balancing work in such a demanding sector and study can feel demanding. However, it’s also what gives you a distinctive advantage. You’re not only learning how technology should work; you’re seeing how it behaves in real organisations, under real constraints, with real users. That lived experience develops judgement, adaptability and resilience — qualities that can’t be taught from a textbook and which will matter just as much as technical knowledge as your career progresses.
This is where developing your ‘Digital Edge’ comes into play. Getting involved in networking opportunities, hackathons, debates and masterclasses allows you to stretch beyond your day‑to‑day role, testing ideas, challenging assumptions, learning from others and building confidence in how you think as well as what you know. These experiences help shape not just capable apprentices, but well‑rounded digital technologists ready to navigate a fast‑changing future with curiosity, clarity and purpose. At BPP, we’re committed to helping you find your ‘Digital Edge’ whilst on your programme with us. In this edition, you can learn about some fantastic upcoming opportunities to get involved including our first ever Digital Edge Debate.
Have a great term and as always, my virtual door is always open for any feedback you’d like to share.

The BPP Digital Edge & Techspere
Head of Students Update
With Digital Edge Live in London, our first in‑person event of the year successfully wrapped up, we’re excited to share that there are more opportunities on the way for our learners to get involved in. At the end of April, we’ll be launching our first-ever Debates Event, where two teams of apprentices will go head‑to‑head exploring the question: “Is AI creativity genuine, or just sophisticated plagiarism?”
This event will be held online, and we’d love for you to come along and support the debate teams. If you’d like to stay updated on future debate topics or get involved yourself, please let me know. Debating is a fantastic way to build skills in public speaking, teamwork, research, and preparation.
May is shaping up to be a busy and exciting month. Alongside our regular Performance & Impact Session and Masterclass, we’ll be launching our Student Voice Forums. These forums have been running on the degree side, offering learners the chance to give live feedback and hear real-time responses. We’re now opening them up to our Level 3–6 apprentices across the School of Tech, Firebrand, and Estio.
We also have our Virtual Research Conference taking place on 20th May where you will get to see students from the School of Technology present their projects.
All upcoming events are advertised on The Hubb, OneFile, Elms, and shared in the classroom. We hope to see you getting involved and having a great time taking part in these opportunities.

Digital Edge Live, London 2026
To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we launched our rebranded apprentice community event, Digital Edge Live in London. Our aim was to give attendees choice and interactivity with the activities that we put on for them.
There were workshops covering “An Intro to Ethical Hacking” by Dominic Lyons, Website Building with Matthew Gibbons and a Tableau tech demo by Eglė Butt. We also had a couple of AI tech demos covering “Prompt Engineering” by Scott Kenyon and “Is this AI?” by David Green PGDip
We closed the event with an Expert Talk covering “The UK’s AI Superpower Plan” hosted by Idris Fabiyi and featuring Gemma McKay MSc SFHEA, Mo Warsame, Scott Kenyon and Matthew Gibbons. The final panelist was Ellie Gent who is one of our L6 Advanced Digital Technology apprentices so there was a broad range of expertise, knowledge and opinion.
Putting on these in-person events for our learners is always a privilege. Thanks to everyone that came and supported the event. Next stop, Manchester later in the year.
Launch of our Women + Tech Podcast
In celebration of this years International Women’s Day, we launched our Women + Tech Podcast. Host Gemma McKay is joined by three amazing degree apprenticeship learners, Ruby Nicholls, Toma Jonaityte, and Becky Grice, who share their tech career journeys, the support that’s shaped them, and how giving back helps them grow.
This first episode marks the start of a community‑driven Women + Tech series where anyone, from first‑day learners to seasoned tech pros can get involved. Whether you want to be a guest, pitch a topic, or even try hosting, this is your space. We’re building a podcast series for everyone who cares about women and tech, a place to share discoveries, ask big questions, and explore what it truly means to find (and use) your voice in tech.
We’re looking for volunteers of all genders to help create further episodes of this podcast and can provide training and support to anyone interested in taking part. Get in touch with Gemma McKay (GemmaMcKay@bpp.com) or Keat Ng (keatng@bpp.com) if you are interested or have any questions
We’re excited to announce the launch of our first-ever Debate Event, which will be held online.
Come along to watch and support two apprentice teams go head‑to‑head as they take the stage in a high‑energy debate tackling the subject of “Is AI truly creative, or is it simply remixing what already exists?”
They will challenge assumptions, spark big ideas, and put their communication and critical‑thinking skills to the test.
What to Expect
- Live debate led by apprentices
- Fresh perspectives on AI, innovation, and the future of creativity
- Real‑world skills in action—persuasion, teamwork, and public speaking
- YOU get a say with an audience vote at the end

Ross Mitchell
Degree Coach
Please explain your job role
The main aim is to support the learners and provide information, advice and guidance. Rather than teaching, it is to give them support to be able to reflect and learn from their own progress, and to help them recognise the opportunities and how to take them. In addition, it is to support the preparation for End Point Assessment and ensure the learners meet the compliance elements and targets.
What inspired you to work in education?
Even from school, I wanted to work in education, but I fell into the technology sector as a late teenager which was much more financially competitive. However, I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity later on and have been in education for about 12 years now. I enjoy meeting all the different personalities, cultures, and characters that I get to interact with daily, and to go through the journey with them to a successful outcome.
What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had doing your current role?
Every single success story is memorable and thankfully, they all have been. Its particularly memorable when a learner has had more challenges than usual, but I am still able to support them so they are able to get to the end of the programme with a positive outcome.
Whilst it might be hard to remember a time when you weren’t dedicating your life to the BPP Education Group, please tell us about the most interesting job you have had?
I was one of a team of 4 project managers that designed and implemented the IT Infrastructure for the London Olympics. I spent 3 years working on it, and actually got to run 2 of the venues for the Games during the Olympics and Paralympics.
What would be your ultimate meal?
I have been lucky enough to travel all over the world, and to try many weird , wonderful, and extremely tasty food. Whilst genuine Mexican food features highly, I think the best dish I ever had (and I have had it a few times now ) is Crespelle alla Fiorentina – an Italian dish of spinach, ricotta in a type of thin pancake, baked in a dish with bechamel sauce and cheese.
What’s your favourite TV show or movie of all time?
The Big Lebowski – I always liked the Cohen Brothers work, and this film has so many layers. Every time I see it, I spot something new. The casting is sublime, and the characters so different and absurd. It still makes me laugh. The Dude Abides.
If you had to take part in a reality TV show, which would you pick and why?
To be honest, reality TV isn’t my thing , and it isn’t “real” as such. I don’t think I would fit very well in any of them. But the one that might be for me, would be Traitors. It seems to have more substance to it, and more depth.
If you weren’t doing what you are now, what would be your dream job?
If I couldn’t be a rock star, then a studio recording engineer, or live sound tech . I have played music all my life and have been in bands for coming up 40 years.
What do you like to do with your weekends?
Unfortunately, I can no longer play rugby but I do watch it on TV. In the summer I play cricket for my local club. I can also be found playing my guitars, sometimes a gig with the band, and the domestic things like shopping. Cinema features whenever we can manage it, but as my wife requires subtitles for the more complex scripts, we are watching more and more on the streaming services that provide this.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
There is a long list, but we spent a 5 nights in Arctic Finland in February 2024 looking for the Northern Lights. And they were spectacular. Which is just as well, as it was -31c.
Steve Alami
Apprenticeship Coach
Please explain your job role
I support apprentices in developing the technical skills and professional behaviors they need to succeed in the ICT industry. My role involves guiding learners through complex concepts, helping them apply knowledge in real-world projects, and ensuring they meet the standards required for their apprenticeship.
I act as a mentor and coach—providing structure, feedback, and encouragement—while keeping everything aligned with industry best practices. In short, I help turn potential into performance by making sure apprentices are confident, competent, and ready for the next step in their careers.
What inspired you to work in education?
I’ve always been passionate about helping people reach their potential. Before working in ICT, I was involved in fitness education, where I saw firsthand how guidance and encouragement could transform someone’s confidence and future. That experience taught me the value of supporting learners through challenges and celebrating their achievements.
What inspires me now is the same principle—helping individuals take the next step in their careers. Seeing someone progress, gain new skills, and open doors to opportunities is incredibly rewarding, and that’s what drives me to do what I do every day.
What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had doing your current role?
One of the most rewarding experiences was working with a learner who faced significant mental health challenges and, from day one, believed she wouldn’t be able to pass her EPA interview. It took consistent support, confidence-building, and navigating many ups and downs throughout her apprenticeship.
Watching her grow in resilience and skill—and ultimately achieve a distinction—was an incredible reminder of why I do this job. Seeing that transformation was truly inspiring.
Whilst it might be hard to remember a time when you weren’t dedicating your life to the BPP Education Group, please tell us about the most interesting job you have had?
Before joining BPP, I ran my own business as a personal trainer for many years. I’ve always believed in the principle that “we are what we eat”—though I’ll admit, I’ve had my fair share of cheat days!
What really inspired me was the journey: watching someone transform, whether it was through weight loss or building strength. Interestingly, that principle is exactly the same in education. Supporting learners through challenges and seeing them achieve their goals—whether it’s a fitness milestone or earning a distinction—brings the same sense of pride and fulfillment.
Different tools, same mission: helping people reach their potential and thankfully, no burpees required in apprenticeships.
What would be your ultimate meal?
I have a real taste for Persian cuisine—it’s full of rich flavors and vibrant spices. But with friends and family in Morocco and Israel, my dream meal would be a mix of all three: Moroccan tagine, Israeli salads, and Persian saffron rice with crispy tahdig.
Basically, if it involves saffron, slow-cooked lamb, and a table big enough for everyone, I’m happy. Just don’t ask me to choose between tahdig and fresh pita—that’s a decision I’m not prepared to make.
What’s your favourite TV show or movie of all time?
I had to think about this one, but as I grew up, I really enjoyed reading fantasy books. So, I’d have to say the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The storytelling, the world-building, and the epic journey really stuck with me—and it stayed very true to the original books, which I appreciate. I’m just not a fan of those Hollywood over-produced movies that lose the heart of the story. Lord of the Rings got it right.
If you had to take part in a reality TV show, which would you pick and why?
Honestly, I’ve been subjected to plenty of reality TV thanks to my partner—while she sits like a potato enjoying every episode! If I had to choose, I’d probably go for something like The Apprentice (fitting, right?) because at least it’s about skills, strategy, and a bit of business sense. Plus, I’d rather negotiate a deal than eat bugs in the jungle!
If you weren’t doing what you are now, what would be your dream job?
That’s a tough one—and a really powerful question because it made me stop and think. Back in my heyday, I wanted to be a DJ, and I’m definitely not materialistic enough to aim for something like being a footballer.
These days, I think I’d love to be a dog trainer. It’s not just about helping the dog—it’s about helping the family too, creating harmony and understanding. Plus, the loyalty you get from a pet is something truly special. Knowing you’re building that bond and improving lives on both ends of the lead would be incredibly rewarding. And the bonus? I’d get to spend most of my time outdoors.
What do you like to do with your weekends?
I’m quite active and have an energetic dog, so I really enjoy spending time outdoors. Working from home makes getting outside my release—it’s a great way to reset after a busy week. My dog doesn’t always agree, though; she’s not the most sociable with other dogs, so every walk feels like a diplomatic mission! Still, fresh air and open spaces are my go-to for a perfect weekend.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
The most adventurous thing I’ve ever done was solo traveling to Africa to help build wells in villages and teach maths and English to young people in schools. It was challenging, rewarding, and completely life-changing.
Come to think of it, teaching English back then isn’t too dissimilar to what I do now—supporting people on their learning journey and helping them unlock opportunities. Different setting, same purpose: trying to make a positive impact, that pretty much sums me up.
Courtney Rolph-Mulvey
Events and Engagement Manager – BPP Students Association
Please explain your job role
My role is all about creating memorable experiences and building a sense of community for BPP students. From planning socials, cultural celebrations, and wellness activities to supporting student societies and running campaigns, the aim is to make student life vibrant and inclusive. It’s a mix of creativity, organisation, and collaboration – bringing people together both on campus and online to ensure every student feels connected and supported.
What inspired you to work in education?
I started my journey at BPP as a Business Apprentice while working on the Professional Qualifications side of the company. After completing my course, I knew I wanted to move over to the university side because I wanted to create more opportunities for students like me – distance learners and apprentices – who often face unique challenges. My goal has always been to make their experience richer, more connected, and full of possibilities.
What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had doing your current role?
One of my most memorable moments with the Students’ Association was hosting an event where Harmony Murphy, Head of Global Strategy at Google, delivered a keynote talk. It was such a proud moment because I’d worked hard to make it happen, and seeing the room full of students completely engaged was amazing. It was a reminder of why I do this job: creating opportunities that inspire and connect people.
Whilst it might be hard to remember a time when you weren’t dedicating your life to the BPP Education Group, please tell us about the most interesting job you have had?
My most interesting job before joining BPP was definitely when I worked at Revolution! I was there for 3 years as a supervisor, which meant most of my weekends were spent running the floor, managing the team, and keeping everything on track but I honestly loved it. It was fast-paced, full of energy, and I met so many amazing people. Plus, I’ve got a ton of funny stories from those days.
What would be your ultimate meal?
This is such a hard one because before my dad retired, he was a chef so I’ve always loved food. If I had to pick, my go-to starter would be calamari, with lots of lemon and aioli. For the main, I’d go for Char Siu pork, beef chow fun, and garlic green beans. And for dessert, anything chocolate – cake, brownies, fudge cake, you name it! I can’t say all three courses would make the perfect meal together, but they’re definitely my favourites.
What’s your favourite TV show or movie of all time?
I’d say I’m a sucker for cheesy sitcoms like Friends or How I Met Your Mother. But on the flip side, I’m also really into dark and gritty shows like Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, and Game of Thrones – Sorry, I can’t pick this one.
If you had to take part in a reality TV show, which would you pick and why?
I would love to do the Traitors!
If you weren’t doing what you are now, what would be your dream job?
If I wasn’t doing what I do now, my dream job would honestly be a celebrity interviewer. I’m obsessed with shows like Hot Ones and Last Meal on YouTube. Something along those lines would be amazing.
What do you like to do with your weekends?
I love slow weekends. My perfect day starts with a coffee and a cuddle with my cat while I read. In the afternoon, you’ll usually find me out on a walk somewhere with friends or family, just enjoying being outdoors. Then to round off the day, I love going out for food or heading to the pub for the evening.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Bungee Jumping over a river in Scotland.
