Welcome to the latest edition of our Tech Apprenticeships and Higher Education student newsletter which is, yet again, full of the amazing successes and activities of our learners – I’m constantly wowed by how you find time to fit in so much over and above your studies! It was therefore very apt to see so many of our learners from across our 3 entities recognised in the recent BCS Apprenticeship Awards and to secure so many winners and highly commended. Congratulations to everybody – we are very proud of you. 

I really enjoyed meeting some of our student voice reps earlier this week and listening first-hand to some of your feedback which I promise, we’ll look into and address. As always, my ‘virtual’ door is always open if anybody would like to get in touch with me – cassandramacdonald@bpp.com 

Hopefully you are enjoying all the extra sessions we put on in terms of career skills, technical masterclasses and our podcast which is now into it’s 2nd year. However, we’d LOVE for more of what we do to feature you, our learners, and taking part should also help in terms of your own personal development. Please do speak to Keat, your coach or tutor if you’d like to get involved. 

As we enter the summer months, I hope everybody can find some time for some rest and relaxation whether that be at home or abroad. If I have learned anything in my long career, it’s the importance of looking after your health – both physical and mental – and holidays are super important to me. I’ll be off to Malta in a few weeks and booked to try scuba diving for the first time as I’ve always been too scared to before! 

For anybody looking for a more physical way to unwind, hopefully you’ll be up for taking part in Keat’s London Bridge walk on Friday 8th August in honour of our staff charity – The British Heart Foundation. This will be open to all staff and students so if you’re around, please consider joining in.

Welcome to the July 2025 edition of the BPP Tech Newsletter!

We’re kicking things off with a huge congratulations to our finalists in this year’s BCS IT & Digital Apprenticeship Awards. This year was a record-breaker for us, with 17 finalists who are doing their apprenticeships with BPP, Firebrand, and Estio.  

“Together We Change” is a BPP University initiative where we review and listen to learner feedback and make meaningful changes on the back of it. It’s a great initiative and am happy to announce that we are launching it for Level 3 to 5 apprenticeships across Estio, Firebrand and BPP School of Tech. When your feedback leads to improvements, we’ll let you know because even one great suggestion can make a big difference. So please keep sharing your thoughts through our surveys as we’re always listening. 

On a more sombre note, the BPP Students’ Association held a memorial in BPP’s London Portsoken office on the 12th June to honour the victims of the tragic plane crash at Ahmedabad Airport in Gujarat, India. Among those lost were four BPP students, including one who was about to begin their journey with us at the School of Tech. The memorial was a heartfelt tribute, attended by both students and staff, as we came together to remember and reflect. 

I hope you enjoy this issue of the newsletter and a big thank you to everyone who contributed to this edition. Celebrating Excellence at the 2025 BCS IT & Digital Apprenticeship Awards

This year’s BCS IT and Digital Apprenticeship Awards took place in Windsor on the 27th July, hosted by the BBC’s LJ Rich. For the second consecutive year, BPP provided a co-host for the event, with Sam Fletcher—currently completing his Level 4 Software Developer apprenticeship with Firebrand—joining LJ on stage. Sam brought energy, wit, and charm to the evening, keeping the audience entertained and engaged. Well done Sam and to top it off he managed to bag an award himself. 

This year, 17 outstanding finalists from BPP, Firebrand, and Estio were recognised for their achievements, with three taking home top honours. We’re incredibly proud of every finalist. Reaching this stage is an incredible achievement as it requires a compelling written nomination reviewed by a BCS panel, followed by an interview. 

To all current learners: it’s never too early to start thinking about next year’s awards. Begin working with your coaches and line managers to reflect on your journey. What projects are you contributing to that are making a real impact—on your organisation, your customers, or even your community? How have you gone above and beyond expectations or served as a role model to your peers? The answers will form the foundation of your nomination. 

A great day of celebrating Tech talent, networking and meeting up with old colleagues. With talent like this, the future of the UK’s IT and digital industries is in excellent hands.

Estio’s Multi-Channel Marketer Programme Celebrates Early Successes and Outstanding Feedback

Estio’s Multi-Channel Marketer Programme, launched in December 2023, has reached an exciting milestone as its first cohorts begin the End-Point Assessment (EPA) process. This new, nationally developed curriculum has been designed to equip aspiring marketers with cutting-edge skills across multiple digital platforms and has gained exceptional praise from learners and industry stakeholders alike.

Built around the evolving needs of modern businesses, it covers a wide range of core competencies in campaign planning, SEO, branding, and data-driven strategy, ensuring students are industry-ready from day one.

The programme has also been strengthened through a valuable partnership with the Digital Marketing Institute (DMI), and therefore our Learners now benefit from the following additional benefits:

  • The DMI Pro Course – A globally recognised certification that deepens strategic and technical expertise.
  • The DMI AI in Marketing Course – Equipping learners with insights into artificial intelligence and its transformative impact on digital campaigns.
  • Full access to DMI’s website and resources – Providing ongoing learning through toolkits, webinars, templates, and the latest industry insights.

These enhancements have significantly enriched the learner experience, giving students access to world-class content and globally relevant credentials.

With 23 students currently progressing through the End Point Assessment, early outcomes are already looking very positive. We’re very proud to say that our very first EPA grade was a distinction!

Feedback from learners has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the relevance of the course material, the quality of delivery, and the real-world applicability of the skills taught.

As Estio grows its Multi-Channel Marketer Programme, this early success marks just the beginning of its impact on the next generation of marketing professionals.

In total and thus far, we have had seven students go through the first assessment method on the course, all of whom have had successful outcomes! In addition, the aforementioned DMI courses have also been very well received and have greatly helped to build their knowledge. Overall, we have seen a 97.69% pass rate on DMI certification exams across our students.

Apprentice Spotlight - Josh Askew, Service Desk Lead - Integral IT

Which programme did you complete?

Level 3 Information Communications Technician

Please can you tell us about your background and career journey so far?

I have always been interested in all areas of IT as a hobby such as trying out programming, graphic design, building PC’s, web development and playing video games. I studied Computer Science at both GCSE and A-levels and felt that looking for an apprenticeship would be a good fit for me.

After finishing Sixth Form, and a few months of searching, I landed my apprenticeship in my hometown with Integral IT with Fireband Training. Over the 14 months I have been with the company, the opportunities, freedom and support I have been given has been immense. I have progressed from starting as First Line Support to promotion to Second Line Support, and now upon the completion of my apprenticeship I am the business’ Service Desk Lead. In this time, my technical knowledge and skillset has improved at a massive rate. I am now supporting new apprentices that come into the business, managing entire projects independently and meeting all our Service Desk requirements with escalated tickets.

The additional certifications provided by the Firebrand apprenticeship were an excellent experience. I would always look forward to driving to the training centre on the 4 occasions I visited. The training provided was great and I took each vendor exam at the end of each course and passed every certification.

Please tell us about how and why you chose to study an apprenticeship?

I chose to study an apprenticeship as I liked the ‘hands-on’, real work experience. I feel if I had gone to university (as that was always my alternative), I would still be the same person at the end – stepping into an entry-level IT job with no corporate experience under my belt. The freedom of the apprenticeship is perfect for how I wanted to work.

How did completing your Apprenticeship benefit you?

Completing my apprenticeship benefitted me by providing me with the certification for all my hard work and proof of the skills I have gained over the course. The certifications I gained, as well as my fast development have helped me progress through the business internally. As mentioned previously, I have also gained a promotion.

How did it benefit your employer?

Completing my apprenticeship benefitted my employer by having a more skilled workforce, increasing loyalty/retention of staff, improved morale and long term plan for my role.

What was your favourite part of the Apprenticeship?

The training/instructors were all great and I passed all of the vendor exams first time. They were a brilliant break from my role to focus on the certifications.

My learning mentor Steve Alami was another highlight of my apprenticeship. The check-in meetings, progress reviews and support provided by Steve was perfect.

Did any of the work you were involved in while on your Apprenticeship, have a positive impact on either your local community or one of your clients? If so, please explain how.

The positive impact from the technical side of things has been significant. One of our clients named me in one of their Google reviews saying “Josh Askew, our main point of contact has been an absolute rockstar. His Microsoft 365 wizardry is unmatched and his ability to explain complex set ups is a gift. Our Microsoft 365 environment is finally secure, streamlined and working the way it should”

Please tell us about any highlights or soft skills you’ve developed during your apprenticeship.

The skills that I have developed during the apprenticeship are time management, project management, problem solving, customer communications, confidence, public speaking, and many technical skills of course

What would you say to someone that was on the fence about doing an Apprenticeship?

With the qualifications provided, the work experience and the skills learned on the job while earning are a no-brainer.

I have no regrets taking an apprenticeship.

AWS Deep Racer Event

Amazon Web Services invited us to enter a team of degree students for their AWS Deep Racer Event which took place in London. Our team was made up of learners from our L6 Applied Digital Technology and Data Science programmes so we had a good mix of skillsets. For this event, the team had to learn about Machine Learning through racing autonomous cars around a track and competing with other teams for the best time. It was a great and fun way to learn about ML. The team did an amazing job collaborating remotely.

Mike Aspinall

It was great to be a part of the AWS DeepRacer day! Not only was it a fun opportunity to meet and network with fellow apprentices in person (a nice change to virtual sessions), but also it was really interesting to learn more about reinforcement learning. I’d never done anything like this before, so it was a great intro and crash course for me. And better yet – our racer car actually made it around the track without crashing, phew!

Luke Parkin

The deep racer event was both really fun and a great learning experience. Prior to the event, we attended some lectures hosted by AWS members explaining how model training works, how AWS is used to set up these training models, and tips and tricks on how to train our models. We were provided the resources and expertise to then go ahead and start training our models. We trained a deep learning model in a virtual simulator to race a car around a track. After hours of training for several models, we selected the best out of our team and submitted them. On the day, our team met up and we discussed strategy, as we weren’t sure how the models would perform in the real world with real camera input, rather than simulated cameras. We were one of the first racers to go, and were cautiously optimistic, however that quickly went out the window when our car started throwing itself off the track! Fortunately, though, we had two chances to race. So in between some of the amazingly informative lectures put on by AWS staff at the event, both on technical and project management aspects, we looked at our other models and made some fixes and gave it another go a few hours later. Our models did much better this time, and we secured a much better spot in the leaderboard. It was a really fun event and I would definitely encourage people to give it a go if you have the opportunity!

 

Student Voice Forum Representative Spotlight - David Morgan

For BPP’s degree programmes, we ask for learners to volunteer to represent their cohorts by gathering feedback and representing them twice a year for our Student Voice Forum Rep meetings. David is coming up to year 2 studying his Level 7 Integrated Degree Apprenticeship in Advanced Data Analytics.

Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you’re studying?

I work as an Insights and Performance Analyst within the insurance sector, specialising in IT data.  I started my career in IT over 20 years ago as a Technical Support Analyst and have since progressed through a variety of roles and disciplines before becoming a fully-fledged data professional.  I feel fortunate that my current role allows me to focus on data exclusively—it’s like detective work, transforming abstract information into a narrative that helps colleagues make informed decisions.  My apprenticeship is closely tied to my work; I’m currently in my first year of a Level 7 MSc in Applied Data Analytics, which is expanding my perspective on data—its power, its potential, and how much remains to be unlocked.

What inspired you to become a SVF rep?

Courses like these have the potential to be transformative.  I was eager to contribute in some way to their ongoing success by working alongside my cohort to celebrate what’s going well and to collaborate on solutions to any challenges we encounter.  At university, we all learn from each other, and this role gives me the opportunity to help nurture that continued learning.

What advice would you give to learners starting their programme?

Be ruthless with your time management—but also kind to yourself.  The work needs to get done, but don’t be discouraged if things aren’t perfect; you won’t master everything the first time around.  Set aside dedicated time each week for your studies and stick to it as best you can.  Start assignments early—don’t leave them to the last minute.  Most importantly, don’t hesitate to speak up if you’re struggling; the coaches are fantastic and always ready to help.

How do you think your experience as a SVF rep will help you in the future?

I consider myself a good listener, but there’s always room for improvement.  As an SVF rep, I have the opportunity to refine this skill while representing diverse perspectives across the cohort and university—something that will undoubtedly be valuable in my future career.

Introduction of an end of programme survey, designed to capture final feedback on the learner’s overall experience on programme and during the EPA process.

How has this benefited the learner experience

It has provided a final opportunity for the learner to feed back any positive impressions of their coach as well as make any recommendations for improvement that we could adopt. We are awaiting feedback from the first handful of surveys that have been completed.

Feedback moved from Daily feedback at the end of each session to now only being mandatory at the end of the module (Estio Sessions)

How has this benefited the learner experience

Feedback from students was that are too many forms to complete at the end of each session, hence the change.

We have implemented an exam email team so that apprentices who want to sit exams, email
the team, with a passed mock and it is booked with no delay.

Quicker for the apprentices to book their exams.

Off The Job - Staff Spotlight

Ash Imran, Client Solutions Director

Please explain your job role

As a Client Solutions Director at BPP, I work closely with senior leaders to shape holistic talent strategies that align with their business goals. By leveraging the apprenticeship levy and commercially funded training, I help organisations build critical capabilities, developing the skills they need to thrive today, while also futureproofing their workforce for tomorrow.

What inspired you to work in education?

What inspired me to work in education is the transformative power of learning. I still remember the confidence that came from finally grasping something new early in my career—it made me realise how meaningful education can be when it’s done right.

At the same time, I’ve always been struck by how much technology has evolved since I was born in 1993, while many learning methods haven’t kept pace. I’m passionate about reimagining how we engage learners, whether they’re school-age students or seasoned professionals, especially in a world full of distractions.

Finally, I find it incredibly rewarding to collaborate with senior leaders, department heads and talent professionals to build talent strategies that are both practical and visionary. I see each programme we design as a piece of a larger organisational puzzle, when placed correctly, it brings lasting impact.

What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had doing your current role?

Although I only joined BPP in February, one of my most memorable moments in this type of role was presenting a Data, AI, and Change Management solution to the leadership team of a UK-based Formula 1 organisation. As someone passionate about both innovation and motorsport, it was an unforgettable experience—not just because I got to present a transformative learning strategy, but also because I met the Team Principal and saw the 2024 F1 car up close. It was a true full-circle moment where personal passion met professional impact.

Whilst it might be hard to remember a time when you weren’t dedicating your life to the BPP Education Group, please tell us about the most interesting job you have had? 

Haha, I’d have to say the most interesting job I’ve had was DJing at a bar on Friday and Saturday nights before COVID. I turned a hobby and my love for music into something I could share with others. On Fridays, I’d head straight from work in the City to Kent, set up at the venue, and play until 2am. It was definitely exhausting at times, but I absolutely loved the energy, creativity, and connection it brought.

What would be your ultimate meal? 

My ultimate meal? A classic Nando’s order: 4 hot chicken thighs, spicy rice, green peas, and a side of halloumi. It might sound simple, but I’m all about appreciating the little things these days—and this combo hits the spot every time!

What’s your favourite TV show or movie of all time? 

Favourite TV Show : Suits
Favourite Movie : Top Gun – Maverick

If you had to take part in a reality TV show, which would you pick and why? 

I’d go for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Quizzes are starting to grow on me—and let’s be honest, the chance to win some money and put it towards a Porsche 911 Turbo S sounds like a pretty good deal!

If you weren’t doing what you are now, what would be your dream job? 

If I wasn’t doing what I’m doing now and could choose anything, I’d be a full-time F1, GT3, or GT4 race car driver—no question. I’ve always had a huge passion for cars and motorsport, so living life in the fast lane would be the ultimate dream!

What do you like to do with your weekends? 

My weekends are a mix of quality time and self-care. I like to get the usual life admin out of the way, then spend time with my partner, family, and friends. One of my favourite things in the summer is an early morning ‘Top Gear style’ Drive with two of my closest mates.

Since experiencing two brain haemorrhages last year, I’ve built a weekend routine around going to the gym and taking outdoor walks. That structure has played a huge role in my recovery, both physically and mentally, so I’ve made it a priority to stay consistent.

And when there’s time, I love trying new restaurants. I even found an Excel spreadsheet from a London food critic with hidden gems across the city. So far, it hasn’t missed!

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?

One of the most adventurous things I’ve done was during my first trip to Toronto, Canada. On impulse, I booked a left-hand drive car on Turo and decided to road trip to Niagara Falls, despite never having driven a left hand drive car before. My friend was praying we wouldn’t crash! Thankfully, we made it there and back in one piece, had a brilliant road trip, took in the incredible sights of the Falls, and topped it off with some proper Canadian poutine before heading back to Toronto. An unforgettable adventure!

Chriss Hardisty, Head of Performance and Progress

Please explain your job role

My current role is as Head of Performance & Progress (Degree Apprenticeships) within BPP School of Technology.

This means I am responsible for the performance of our degree apprenticeships, tracking and ensuring we remain compliant with apprenticeship regulations, working closely with our group Quality & Compliance teams. A large part of my role involves leading and equipping our brilliant Degree Coaching team, of which I am immensely proud!

Whilst it might be hard to remember a time when you weren’t dedicating your life to BPP,  please tell us about the most interesting job you have had?

I have to say that I have been lucky enough to have had a fairly varied career before finding my home at BPP!

My early career was in radio and TV, initially as a technical producer, working with a few famous names such as Andy Crane and Peter Kay, to name-drop a couple! My claim to fame from that time would be receiving a proposal of marriage from a former Man Utd and Wales international footballer. And no, it wasn’t Ryan Giggs. And, I said no 😀

I also worked as a Script Supervisor at the God Channel for 2 years, which is a satellite tv channel covering 4/5ths of the world. That was one of the most interesting and surreal jobs I’ve ever had, but I made some amazing friends that I still keep in touch with.

My most rewarding and most challenging job was working as Referrals Coordinator at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation charity, finding accommodation and allocating a support worker to people who were street homeless and misusing substances or just released from prison with a history of substance misuse.

Before I found my way into education, I worked for many years as an IT project/service manager for several IT consultancies, which led me into coaching project management apprentices and that is how I ended up here!

What would be your ultimate meal?

This is very difficult to choose as I love food! It would have to be a choice between Christmas dinner or a decent curry I think!

If you had to take part in a reality TV show, which would you pick and why?

This is a tough one as my guilty pleasures right now are Married at First Sight UK and Big Brother, but I think I’d love to be a guest on Below Deck, sipping champagne and eating canapes served by Aesha!

What’s your favourite TV show or movie of all time?

Favourite movie(s) – Back to the Future trilogy. My brother is a real super fan, and was once featured on a tv programme with Keith Lemon about the movies. We can recite most of the script along with the cast I think, and regularly quote lines from the films to suit a particular moment like true geeks!

Favourite TV Show(s) – I am more of a box set kind of person, I love getting obsessed with a tv show! I love property programmes and history documentaries but I also love crime dramas/true crime. But, if I really have to choose only one, it probably has to be the remake of Battlestar Galactica as I actually cried when I finished it.

Where is your favourite place to visit and what makes it so great for you?

My favourite place to visit is a little fishing village called Kippford, in Dumfries & Galloway, south-west Scotland. My family have been visiting this place since my grandparents discovered the area in the late 60s and my entire extended family would spend school holidays there.

Now my cousins and I still regularly stay there with our kids, who are experiencing the same adventures we did growing up visiting this beautiful place. We all call it our happy place and it definitely has our hearts.

If you weren’t doing what you are now, what would be your dream job?

I feel lucky that I love what I do and I am proud to work with such a brilliant bunch of colleagues! However, if I wasn’t doing this, I’d consider a career in social work or as a Forensic Psychologist.

What do you like to do with your weekends? 

My weekends have changed dramatically since becoming a parent! They are all spent with my little girl Evie, who is now nearly 16 months old. She is my joy and my little BFF, so I spend as much time with her as possible at weekends. We are often found on the swings, or on play/coffee dates with friends.

Finally, can you tell us something we don’t know about you?

Before having my daughter, I had a side-hustle as a semi-professional singer, performing at pubs, restaurants and the odd garden party! I have also been in a couple of originals bands, writing our own material and I do still occasionally write bits and pieces.

I intend to pick it up again at some point as I miss the music, however Evie is my singing partner these days! She seems to have a love for music so maybe she will follow in my footsteps one day!

Perran James, Level 4 Network Engineer Coach

Please explain your job role

My job role involves working closely with learners to help them achieve their apprenticeship.  My responsibilities include keeping them aware of timeline events, checking their welfare, keeping their progress moving in the right direction and helping them when they may be struggling or need help or guidance.

I also have regular 1:1’s with them and every 8 weeks also with their managers to ensure we share 360′ feedback in a formal manner.

It is also important that all learner’s individual needs are accommodated and this can include adapting to their additional learning needs to ensure any medical conditions are supported.  I feel everyone has the right to learn but we need to ensure despite their individual needs, they have the opportunity to do so and also flourish at the same time.

Working to deadlines and compliance frameworks is also an important part of my job.

What inspired you to work in education?

I have worked in the IT industry for over 36 years now and felt compelled to pass on my own experiences and knowledge onto those who are following a similar career pathway. I get a lot of satisfaction coaching especially younger learners and seeing them achieve not only their apprenticeships but also their aspirations.

What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had doing your current role?

I was originally brought into troubleshoot a stakeholder contract that had been adversely impacted by the effects of the COVOD-19 lockdowns. Apprentices were past their original end dates, demoralised and disillusioned.

I was delighted to have turned this situation around to a positive outcome for those affected with all of the learners achieving their apprenticeship and in many cases securing distinctions too. It was hard work and there were many sleepless nights worrying around whether I could do it without letting people down but with hard work, I was very happy with the outcome.

Many of those affected learners are still in touch with me to this day and tell me how much the apprenticeship has changed their life for the better.

Whilst it might be hard to remember a time when you weren’t dedicating your life to the BPP Education Group, please tell us about the most interesting job you have had?

I was an apprenticeship assessor for IT Technician, customer service and business administration and I worked very closely with the Army and Royal Navy and was often in the back tracked vehicles and on board ships doing observations which was an enjoyable workplace.

During my time supporting the Army with their apprenticeship in particular, one of my own apprenticeship achieved Army Apprentice of the Year 2018 (https://www.pearson.com/uk/web/pearsontq/news-and-blogs/2018/03/pearson-tq-apprentices-win-top-awards.html)

What would be your ultimate meal?

For me you can’t beat Roast Beef and all the trimmings followed by a fresh berry pavlova, all washed down with a crisp, dry white wine.

What’s your favourite TV show or movie of all time? 

Being of a certain age group, I also chuckle watching repeats of Only Fools and Horses, for me it was simple and entertaining comedy at its best.

If you had to take part in a reality TV show, which would you pick and why? 

I am hooked on Race Around the World on the BBC so for me that would be my dream to take part and see the world and different cultures too.

If you weren’t doing what you are now, what would be your dream job? 

My Dad was a Police Sergeant in the Royal Air Force and I had plans to also join the RAF train to be a fighter pilot but sadly my eyesight prevented me from pursuing that career.

What do you like to do with your weekends? 

My weekends are very busy usually and involves ferrying one of my two boys to football and Rugby training and matche.

I am also a very keen sports photographer and do lots of freelance work for various sporting events but usually football and rugby.

I am also a very keen gardener and spend most of my free time in the garden, I love the sun !!!

What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?

I love climbing into the mountains of North Wales so for me hiking up new peaks and taking in the views are important to me and massively rewarding.
