BPP Tech Newsletter - Q2 2025

Dean of the School of Technology's Introduction

As Managing Director for Technology Apprenticeships and Higher Education & Dean of the School of Technology, I am delighted to welcome you all to the first edition of our revamped newsletter. You may not be aware but as a BPP Group learner, you are part of a community of over 2,000 digital and technology apprentices and higher education students, all looking to develop your careers in this exciting and ever-changing sector.

I am very proud to lead a team of tutors, coaches, programme leads and administrators who are not only committed to helping you achieve your career goals through the successful completion of your programme, but also eager to put on a range of events including masterclasses, lunch’n’learns, podcasts and face to face networking sessions to enable you to learn more about emerging and future technologies and give you a platform to develop different skills through volunteering to get involved. I would encourage you all to get to know your fellow students, expand your network and make the most of the different activities BPP has organised for you.

On a personal note, following major surgery earlier this year, I am slowly getting back to running (although think it will be some time before I’m racing again) but enjoying watching some brilliant TV series – Severance definitely lives up to the hype and as always, reading lots of books (I have a goal to read 60 in 2025) – a recent recommendation is ‘Super Pumped – The Battle for Uber’ a fascinating business book that reads like a thriller – well worth checking out.

Hopefully you will enjoy reading a summary of what we’ve been up to so far in 2025 with much more to come over the remaining months. If anybody does have any feedback on any aspect of your time here at BPP, please do feel free to reach out to me or any of my team.

Warm regards

Cassandra

Head of Students Update

Welcome to the Relaunched School of Tech Quarterly Newsletter

I’m thrilled to bring you this fresh, reimagined newsletter, which I aim to pack with stories, updates, and insights from across BPP School of Tech, Firebrand, and Estio. My goal is to keep you informed while offering interesting content.

First off, a big thank you to everyone who joined us at the Big Apprenticeship Meet-up in London during National Apprenticeship Week. Meeting our learners from BPP, Firebrand, and Estio—alongside finally connecting face-to-face for the first time with some of my colleagues—was a real highlight. The energy and positivity at the event reminded us of the value of live gatherings, especially for those learning remotely. For those in the north, stay tuned for details about our next meet-up—we want to bring this experience closer to you!

I’m excited to attend my first graduation ceremony for School of Tech degree learners on May 15 in London. It’ll be wonderful to celebrate alongside our graduates. And on another exciting note, we’ve just welcomed our first cohort of international students who’ve embarked on our new Technology Management MSc program.

Voting is now open for this year’s Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards! If you’d like to nominate yourself, visit the link here: Nominate Now! – Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards 2025. Don’t wait too long—the deadline for submissions is May 16.

Outside of work when I’m not busy with family stuff, I’ve been catching up with Netflix’s Daredevil series so I can watch the new series on Disney Plus. I’ve also been sinking my time into a game called Two Point Museum where you manage a virtual museum. Believe me, it’s more fun than it sounds and minutes turn into hours when playing it.

If you have ideas or content you’d like featured in future editions, I’d love to hear from you. Reach out anytime at keatng@bpp.com.

I hope you enjoy the newsletter

Big Apprenticeship Meetup 2025: A Celebration of Tech Talent

This year, we hosted our Big Apprenticeship Meetup during National Apprenticeship Week—what better time to celebrate our tech apprentices than in a week dedicated to apprenticeships! The event was a tremendous success, bringing together learners from all three of BPP’s Tech entities.

The day kicked off with a panel on “Can AI Be Truly Creative?”. Developed by Sean Rafter and Jacob Reilly Cooper, our Heads of Curriculum for Data/AI and Software respectively, the panel featured industry voices such as Tony Pitchford from the BCS and Shalom Galagher, a current learner on our L6 Digital Technology Solutions Degree and Gemma McKay (Award Lead L7 Data). The discussion tackled fundamental questions about the nature of creativity, the limitations of current AI models, and the ethical considerations surrounding AI’s role in creative processes. The panel concluded with forward-looking insights on the future of AI creativity, including the potential for AI collaboration and the development of embodied AI.

Post-lunch, attendees participated in workshops. Justine Clack (Data Tutor) and Egle Butt (Data Programme Lead) led “Data Symphony.” Jacob and Scott Kenyon (Software Tester Programme Lead)  delivered a session titled “Coding: What You Need to Know to Dive Straight In”. The session included problem solving and looking at a poorly developed project plan and what could have done differently in the future.

The final session of the day was the panel “Tech Leaders as a Business Catalyst”, designed by Gemma McKay, Anthony Lees (Award Lead L7 Software), and Xavier Nel (Award Lead MSc Technology Management). Expertly chaired by Tommaso Bendoni (Head of Integration & Change), the panel provided valuable insights into how tech leadership drives business transformation.

Kudos to the attendees who participated in all four panels and workshops and still had the energy to join us for an offsite networking event at the Slug and Lettuce—it was a fantastic way to wrap up the day!

Thanks to everyone who shared their feedback. Your input is invaluable and will help us make future events even better.

Data Symphony: Orchestrating a Data-Driven Culture

Justine Clack and Egle Butt ran a Data Culture Workshop during the Big Apprenticeship Meet Up event in London. Justine is a Data Tutor for Levels 3-7, specialising in Data Strategy, Data Culture, and Data Leadership. Egle is the Level 4 Data Analyst Programme Lead, who is passionate about empowering students to become Data Influencers within their organisations. Here is Justine’s overview of the session:

A strong Data Strategy is only as effective as its implementation across an organisation, this is where Data Culture plays a crucial role – in essence – this was the core discussion of our workshop. Basically, if Data Strategy and Data Culture went out for coffee, they’d argue over who should pay.

During the session, Egle and I walked attendees through a real-life scenario illustrating the consequences of having neither a solid Data Strategy nor a healthy Data Culture to support it. We then challenged the participants to identify key problems and propose solutions based on the four pillars of a strong Data Culture:

  • Governance – How can we implement the Data Strategy within legal and governance frameworks without making them so rigid that they hinder data utilisation?
  • Training – What skills are missing that prevent effective implementation of the Data Strategy?
  • Communication – How can the organisation improve communication to ensure that data insights are shared effectively?
  • Ownership – Which senior leaders should own specific metrics and KPIs to quickly identify and resolve issues, driving the Data Strategy forward?

Working in groups, participants analysed the scenario, discussed the challenges, and collaborated on strategies to address the Data Culture gaps within the company. It was fantastic to see them engage in discussions, demonstrating the very principles of Data Culture within their teams.

Many students found the workshop insightful, recognising that the values they uphold align with those of a strong Data Culture. Several even approached us after the workshop to share their appreciation, mentioning how the session broadened their perspective on leveraging data effectively in their own workplaces.

Overall, it was a dynamic and engaging session filled with meaningful discussions and eager learners.

We encourage you to accompany the badge with your personal experience as an apprentice, offering an authentic and relatable insight into what it’s truly like to be an apprentice.

Other Social Impact Initiatives

We also offer other impactful initiatives such as:

  • Reverse Mentoring Scheme: BPP learners mentor firms, offering fresh perspectives to support diversity and inclusion strategies.
  • Community Outreach: We welcome your ideas for outreach initiatives. If you volunteer with any charities, let us know at socialimpact@bpp.com.

British Computer Society

Last summer, BPP collaborated with the British Computer Society (BCS) on the ‘Force for Good’ campaign, encouraging apprentices to make a difference and help bridge the digital divide. One influencer, Maha Mobeen, shared, “I want to influence young people from care backgrounds to make positive decisions about their future in IT.”

In June 2024, BPP Apprentice Influencer Becky Grice (Level 6 Digital & Technology Solution Apprentice, Autotrader) co-presented the BCS IT Apprenticeship Awards, saying, “Being an Apprenticeship Influencer has provided me with invaluable experiences and opportunities to impact the apprenticeship community.”

You can read Becky’s full testimonial below:

Joining the Apprenticeship Influencer scheme at BPP has been an enriching journey that continues to contribute to my personal and professional growth. Through this initiative, I’ve been able to engage with fellow apprentices and share invaluable insights, experiences, and resources.

The opportunities provided through the scheme have been amazing – the highlight for me being the absolute privilege to co-host the 2024 BCS IT & Digital Apprenticeship Awards alongside Rob Bell!

This, together with other opportunities such as focus groups, feedback sessions and outreach events have helped me to develop essential skills such as communication and networking. I have gained so much confidence in myself, and I feel empowered to embrace new challenges, both within and beyond my role.

Being an Apprenticeship Influencer has not only provided me with a platform to make a positive impact within the apprenticeship community but has also reinforced the significance of embracing learning experiences outside the traditional classroom setting. I am so grateful for the invaluable experiences and opportunities provided through this scheme, and I am excited to continue collaborating, exploring and growing with current and future apprentices.

BPP welcomes our first group of International Students

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our new suite of MSc Technology Management programmes!. Designed to equip and prepare students to excel in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, these programmes include specialised pathways for cyber security specialists and software specialists, and will ensure that our graduates are prepared to tackle the unique challenges and opportunities within these critical fields.

With the rapid pace of change organisations are experiencing every day, we’ll ensure our students learn essential skills in effective project management, managing technologies in business settings and leading organizations through innovation. They will graduate with a strong foundation in both technical and managerial skills, and be prepared to effectively navigate and lead in complex business environments.

Throughout March and April, we’ll be welcoming our first cohorts of students, joining us in London from Nepal, Nigeria and Pakistan. This international group brings a diverse range of perspectives and experiences, enriching our learning environment and promoting a global community of future technology leaders. They will also become part of a rapidly growing community of technology learners across the BPP Group, connecting with peers and professionals who share their passion for technology and leadership.

We warmly welcome these new learners to the BPP community!

Staff Charity 2025

For 2025, the BPP Technology Apprenticeships and Higher Education team has decided to raise as much money as we can for our chosen staff charity, the British Heart Foundation!

The BHF has helped halve the number of people dying from heart and circulatory disease in the UK but sadly everyday hundreds of people lose their lives.

It’s only thanks to support from people like us that the BHF can create new treatments and discover new cures. £24 could pay for two hours of research by an early career scientist, but every pound helps so please give what you can to help me hit our target. Thanks!

Off the Job - Staff Spotlight

Get to know a member of our Tech App’s / Higher Education team – Tom McElroy

Job Role

I’m a Senior Account Manager and I’ve worked in the world of digital apprenticeships for around 15 years. I have been with the group starting at Firebrand for just over 12 years. I’m a big advocate of apprenticeships having seen how people’s lives change for the better over the years.

Whilst it might be hard to remember a time when you weren’t dedicating your life to BPP / Firebrand, please tell us about the most interesting job you have had?

When I was 20, I worked in a small, independent wineshop in Vancouver which was pretty cool. The shop was right next to the movie studios where they filmed the likes of The X Files and Gone in 60 Seconds, etc… We’d often get celebrities come in. I was also encouraged to attend wine tasting events to enhance my ‘knowledge’ of our product range.

What would be your ultimate meal?

The starter would involve some sort of meat, followed by meat for my main course, and either cheesecake, yum yums, churros and/or, meat for dessert. I like meat.

What’s your favourite TV show or movie of all time?

Hmmm… This is a tough one! I don’t think I could list just one favourite movie as there’s so many factors to consider. In no particular order:

  • The Harry Potter Series – It’s become the go-to Christmas movie night in for my girls and I
  • The Lord of the Rings trilogy – I cannot count how many times I’ve watched these!
  • Zoolander – I base myself on Derek Zoolander
  • Shaun of the Dead – Pegg and Frost at their finest! I am always preparing for the zombie apocalypse! I have various strategies depending on location and the type of zombies.
  • Babe Pig in the City – I mean, who doesn’t like a movie about a pig in a city!
Where is your favourite place to visit and what makes it so great for you?

For a cosy weekend away in the UK, it’s got to be the Lake District. Love the little villages, walks, lakes, pubs, trees, and the peacefulness of it all! Very much reminds me of Canada but on a much, much smaller scale!

If you weren’t doing what you are now, what would be your dream job?

I would have loved to own my own restaurant. I’d hire someone to manage the day-to-day running of it, as well as a quality head chef. Basically, I’d sit at the bar talking to customers.

What do you like to do with your weekends?

As I’ve got 3 girls, I spend most of my time running around after them. ‘Netball Sunday’ is the highlight of my weekend watching my girls compete! Kids aside, a perfect day for me would be, a nice long walk, preferably somewhere I’ve not been before. Followed by dinner out and a few drinks afterwards!

Finally, can you tell us something we don’t know about you?

I spent my early years growing up in Australia, Canada, the South of England and now live outside Manchester which is why I have a confusing accent
